Riding on Highway 1.
I get a slow start after a night out in Garberville with the trimmers. I head down Highway 101 to pick up the northern end of Highway 1. I’ve ridden portions of the highway, but I’ve never been on it this far north. The first fifteen miles cut over a thickly wooded mountain from Leggett, CA to the ocean along an extremely winding path. I’m shocked there is so little traffic on it and have a really great morning riding swiftly through incredible corners.

I eventually emerge from the woods at the ocean to very thick fog. As I ride south along the coast, the fog clears off and the beautiful views begin.

One portion of the road dives inland near Point Arena, CA and scenery quickly changes to very dried up farmland. The road then sweeps back the ocean

I pay a visit to the planned community of Sea Ranch to check out some of the buildings I hadn’t seen. The zany Sea Ranch Chapel designed by James Hubbell is quite an amazing piece of craftsmanship. The Ohlson Recreation Center is also great to see. The interior is completely covered in bold colorful graphics.

About fifteen miles south of Sea Ranch I stumble on oceanfront camping at a place called Walsh Landing. It seems like a good stopping point for the day and there are sites available. The views from my site are great. I cook an early camp dinner and watch the sunset.
